From underrated indies to unforgettable classics

Coming-of-age stories are one of the most beloved—and versatile—genres to have ever captivated Hollywood. Whether you’re a fan of romances, comedies, dramas, or action, the universal themes about growing up and becoming your own person provide a prime canvas for every type of movie. There are plenty of films that tap into the ideas of identity, adolescence, and youth, from underrated indie gems like Mid90s and Dìdi to unforgettable classics like Girl, Interrupted and Juno. While the genre certainly has an abundance of teen angst and growing pains, there are also plenty of moments of levity, as depicted in hilarious movies like Eighth Grade and My Old Ass.

For a full rundown of Harper’s Bazaar’s top 21 picks of the best coming-of-age films ever made, keep scrolling.
